Forget WKHS, Tap These 3 Non-Meme Stocks to Play the EV Boom - Yahoo Finance

forget.indah.link

Has the ongoing social-media frenzy gained precedence over fundamental strength of a company in deciding its fate? Well, so it seems and that’s how the meme-mania plays out. With one stock or the other grabbing the attention of investors who are active on the social-media platform, Reddit-fueled meme madness continues. One of the stocks that is being regularly featured among the top 10 most discussed stocks on the Reddit forum lately is electric vehicle (EV) player, Workhorse WKHS. Importantly, the stock topped the subreddit WallStreetBets mentions yesterday.

Workhorse Not Worth Your Money

Riding solely on the retail trading frenzy, with no news catalyst or underlying fundamental strength, shares of Workhorse have soared more than 66% over the past month. Currently carrying a high short interest — as a percentage of float — of around 36%, Workhorse has caught the attention of the day traders who are targeting the stock for a short squeeze.

While the company may offer short-term return potential to Reddit traders, Workhorse is not for rational long-term investors. Given the stock’s stretched valuation metrics (EV/EBITDA being 291.85X versus the industry average of 10.72X), elevated leverage, soaring operating costs, intense competition and disrupted production schedules amid chip crunch dim Workhorse’s prospects. Loss of the U.S. Postal Service contract has further deteriorated the stock’s outlook.

Amid the meme craze, the stock is having a terrific run on the bourses of late but how long can the uptrend continue in the absence of fundamentals? When excitement surrounding the stock will cool down, a freefall in the share price is bound to happen, with investors losing money overnight. So, if you are a rational investor, don’t get tempted to buy Workhorse because its high trading volumes and valuations defy logic. Workhorse currently carries a Zacks Rank #4 (Sell).

EVs are the Present and Future

The e-mobility revolution is expected to continue in 2021 and beyond, more so as President Biden has committed to spend a staggering $174 billion to lift the EV market. With EVs getting mainstream with each passing day, various automakers are investing a vast sum of money in e-mobility. Per Deloitte projections, worldwide EV sales are set to see a CAGR of 29% over the next decade. The Boston Consulting Group projects EVs to more or less account for a third of the global auto industry by 2025 and more than 50% by 2030, indicating a massive jump from 2.6% in 2019.

Picking the Right Way

Meme craze can cause share price volatility in the short run and benefit traders; however, long-term investors should not give in to this hype. It’s wise to ignore the buzz surrounding such meme stocks and bet on fundamentally strong companies in the space to enjoy safe gains. Below we have highlighted three stocks for you if you wish to ride the EV wave. These stocks have a favorable Zacks Rank and strong Style Score. Our research shows that stocks with a VGM Score of A or B combined with a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy) or 2 (Buy) or 3 (Hold) offer the best investment opportunities.

Play the EV Euphoria With These Legacy Auto Stocks

General Motors GM: General Motors’ “all-in” electrification strategy to gain a competitive edge in batteries, software, vehicle integration, manufacturing and customer experience will make EVs the key catalyst for boosting profitability. The firm’s ramped up investment (around $35 billion through 2025) in electric and driverless cars, proprietary Ultium battery technology as well as ambitious EV sales targets bode well for the stock. Its current EV/EBITDA ratio stands at 7.38, way lower than the industry’s 31.76. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for 2021 and 2022 earnings implies year-over-year growth of 24.9% and 15.6%, respectively. The company — currently sporting a Zacks Rank #1 and VGM Score of A — has a long-term expected EPS growth rate of 9.9%. So, if you want to capitalize on the EV revolution, General Motors might just be the best stock to place your bets on. You can see the complete list of today’s Zacks #1 Rank stocks here.

Ford F: General Motors’ closest peer Ford has committed to spend more than $30 billion in the development of EVs through 2025. The Detroit auto giant broke ground on its $1-billion Ford Cologne Electrification Center in Germany. It has also established a battery center to accelerate the research and development of battery technology for revving up its EV capabilities. The impending acquisition of Electriphi, Ford Spin’s launch of new e-bike and Ford Lincoln’s goal to go all-electric by 2030 further demonstrate the EV prowess of the auto biggie. Its current EV/EBITDA ratio stands at 18.95, way lower than the industry’s 31.76. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for 2021 and 2022 earnings implies year-over-year growth of 158.4% and 57.4%, respectively. Ford — currently carrying a Zacks Rank #3 and VGM Score of A — has a long-term expected EPS growth rate of 21.8%.

Volkswagen VWAGY: Volkswagen has been the largest investor in EV technology out of all the global automakers, with $41 billion allocated just toward eco-friendly cars. Per the company’s five-year plan unveiled in November 2020, the Germany-based auto giant intends to spend $86 billion in e-mobility, hybrid technology and digitization through 2025. Green vehicles are set to account for 20% of its total sales by 2025. The firm targets 1 million EV sales this year and plans to launch 70 EVs by 2030. Volkswagen recently stated its intention to phase out the sale of internal combustion engine vehicles in Europe by 2035 and aims to make its entire fleet carbon neutral by 2050. The company’s current EV/EBITDA ratio stands at 2.22, way lower than the industry’s 9.41. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for 2021 and 2022 earnings implies year-over-year growth of 70.2% and 7.5%, respectively. Volkswagen — currently carrying a Zacks Rank #3 and a VGM Score of A — has a long-term expected EPS growth rate of 12%.

KSAT Explains Q&A: Author of ‘Forget the Alamo’ on what history books get wrong about Texas Independence - KSAT San Antonio

forget.indah.link

SAN ANTONIOEditor’s note: On Tuesday at 7 p.m., the KSAT Explains team will host author Chris Tomlinson for a live discussion about the myths and truths about the story of the Alamo. Watch in the video player above or on KSAT.com/tv at 7 p.m.

Most people have heard about the Alamo and the battle that took place on its grounds. But over the years, more people have become familiar with the myths than with the whole, complicated story.

Perhaps there’s no better moment in time to scrutinize how we’ve told and retold the story of the Battle of the Alamo. For the past several years, more Americans have become critical of how we remember historic events and people. Confederate monuments across the country have come down. Without a doubt, more people today know about the Tulsa Race Massacre than did five years ago.

This summer, a trio of Texans released a book boldly titled Forget the Alamo: The Rise and Fall of an American Myth. As the title implies, the book interrogates the stories that have come to be associated with the men who defended the Alamo, and questions what they were really fighting for.

In Forget the Alamo, Chris Tomlinson, Bryan Burrough and Jason Stanford argue that how we view the Alamo’s past has more to do with perpetuating white supremacy than most would care to admit. For that reason, the book’s release has been polarizing. Just look at the Amazon reviews.

The book’s release also comes just a couple of months after a new Alamo redesign plan was approved by San Antonio City Council members. The plan had to be revised after the Texas Historical Commission voted in September to block the relocation of the Cenotaph, a monument that pays tribute to the fallen Alamo Defenders. The plan to repair and move the monument several hundred feet south was one of the most controversial elements of the previous redesign proposal.

Join us tonight at 7:00 p.m. for a special KSAT Explains livestream about the Alamo myths. We’ll take a look at the history of the Spanish mission and how its been portrayed in movies and film. Forget the Alamo author Chris Tomlinson will also join us live for a Q&A.

You can catch the livestream here, on KSAT’s Facebook page or the KSAT TV app.

Watch KSAT Explains: The myths, truth and battle over how the Alamo is remembered in the video player below.

Forget the View: Tech is Most Important Vacation Rental Amenity - PRNewswire

forget.indah.link

NASHVILLE, Tenn., June 29, 2021 /PRNewswire/ -- The 'workcation' trend is bringing vacation technology desires and frustrations into the spotlight, according to new research from tech care company Asurion. The online survey of 500 Digital Nomads – people who are blending work with leisure travel – showcases the need for vacation rentals with more reliable tech amenities as more people embrace the remote work lifestyle.

Nearly all Digital Nomads (97%) say they'll continue to mix work and vacation this year, with 75% saying they'll do so often. This explains why high-speed internet is their No. 1 must-have item in vacation rentals. Despite this, Wi-Fi issues are also their biggest frustration while on vacation. Challenges operating other tech devices in the rental, such as TVs or smart speakers, are the third biggest of frustration, behind rental cleanliness.

"Americans who are taking advantage of remote work flexibility or working while vacationing told us that a rental property with weak or spotty Wi-Fi can ruin their vacation even more than a loud, week-long house party next door. That's a powerful statement that reflects just how much we rely on tech, even while getting a change of scenery away from home," said Mike Dolezal, Asurion Vice President of Home Technology Innovation.

"As the remote work and 'workcation' trend has grown, so has the need for reliable internet and functioning tech devices. Our Tech Experts and nearly 700 uBreakiFix by Asurion stores are prepared to help these workcationers – and all vacationers – with their tech this summer, regardless of whether it's a cracked screen, a laptop that won't turn on or help extending the Wi-Fi."

Technology and entertainment options are the top features Digital Nomads seek out when selecting a vacation rental, requiring must-haves such as Wi-Fi (69%), access to streaming subscriptions (52%) and smart TVs (49%). Availability of amenities such as towels, linens and cookware ranked second, while the rental's security features ranked third.

Over half (57%) of Digital Nomads say the Wi-Fi at their vacation rentals is often not strong enough to meet their work needs, which explains why nearly half (48%) bring a mobile hotspot and a third bring a Wi-Fi extender/router (38%) with them. A pain for guests and hosts alike, spotty Wi-Fi is the top reason Digital Nomads say they would call their rental host directly during their stay. In fact, Digital Nomads are more likely to complain to the host about unreliable Wi-Fi than about broken air conditioning, heat or appliances.

Nearly three-quarters (74%) of Digital Nomads and their families also bring a laptop with them while vacationing and over half (57%) bring a tablet. However, more tech in vacation rentals also means more frustrations when devices don't work or connect properly.

Need your laptop, phone, tablet, or other devices fixed this summer? Asurion Home+ provides fast repair, replacement and Expert tech help for all the home tech devices you use most, whether at home or on-the-road. Or stop by nearly 700 uBreakiFix by Asurion stores across the country to get same-day repair and free device diagnostics on all repairs, including water damage. Customers can even book a 'We Come to You' repair appointment and a uBreakiFix professional repair technician will meet you at your home or vacation rental or any location convenient to complete the repair on site in two hours or less.

About the Research
The Asurion Survey was conducted by Wakefield Research (www.wakefieldresearch.com) among 500 Digital Nomads, defined as office professionals or someone with a "remote work capable" occupation, who has traveled for leisure in the past 12 months and who worked at least some of the time while traveling, between May 26th and June 4th, 2021, using an email invitation and an online survey.

Results of any sample are subject to sampling variation. The magnitude of the variation is measurable and is affected by the number of interviews and the level of the percentages expressing the results. For the interviews conducted in this particular study, the chances are 95 in 100 that a survey result does not vary, plus or minus, by more than 4.4 percentage points from the result that would be obtained if interviews had been conducted with all persons in the universe represented by the sample.

Wildest day in Euros history: Why soccer fans will never forget France-Switzerland & Croatia-Spain - Sporting News

forget.indah.link

It stinks if you had to work on Monday and didn’t have a TV or cell phone. That’s how great a day it was at Euro 2021. Here’s why:

These reactions sum up what the day felt like for fans:

There were so many unbelievable moments. If you were a fan glued to your TV or phone, the rollercoaster of emotions, the nerves, the palpitations, the nail biting — it was all just too much. Here’s how the day unfolded and what it was like in real time:

Spain’s own goal: What a whiff!

When it happened: Croatia 0, Spain 0 (20th minute)

What happened: A back pass by a teammate went right over the foot of Spain ‘keeper Unai Simon and Croatia went up 1-0 vs. Spain.

Instant fan reaction: What’s he doing/thinking? Was that a bad hop on the turf? No, he took his eye off it! How does the ‘keeper come back from that? He’s got to be flustered. Spain has some bad juju at these Euros.

Getty Images

Croatia scores late, sends it to extra time

When it happened: Croatia 2, Spain 3 (92nd minute)

What happened: Croatia’s Mario Pasalic made a strong run into the box and headed home a beautiful cross in stride to make it 3-3. The goal sent the match to extra time.

Instant fan reaction: Where did this come from, Croatia? What a collapse by Spain! No way they’re coming back from that. How could Spain not figure out a way to hold a two-goal lead with 14 minutes left against a team with no real scoring threats? Scenes in Croatia were awesome.

Getty Images

Huge save by that Spain ‘keeper

When it happened: Croatia 3, Spain 3 (6th minute of extra time)

What happened: Spain ‘keeper Unai Simon stopped a point-blank bullet from Croatia’s Andrej Kramaric, who had a clear shot on goal.

Instant fan reaction: Redemption! Good for him. If Simon doesn’t make that save, Croatia is definitely beating Spain. That was a harder save than it looked. Kramaric should’ve roofed it! That was Croatia’s big chance. It won’t happen for them now.

After death threats, the game-winner

When it happened: Croatia 3, Spain 3 (10th minute of extra time)

What happened: Alvaro Morata, the Spain forward whose family was subjected to death threats after he missed a few big scoring chances in previous games, stuck it to all the doubters. It was a fantastic finish, one you'd expect only from a pure forward like Morata.

Instant fan reaction: What class by Morata. That must feel good for him after what he’s been through. His family must be loving it. This is what he does. He’ll miss some easier chances, but then he scores goals that have a higher degree of difficulty. That was big.

Getty Images

Switzerland PK is stopped

When it happened: France 0, Switzerland 1 (55th minute)

What happened: French ‘keeper Hugo Lloris stopped a Ricardo Rodriguez penalty kick which could’ve made it 2-0 Switzerland.

Instant fan reaction: That would’ve put the game away! That’s gonna hurt. But great stop by Lloris. More of a great save than a bad PK. Switzerland is going to regret this.

Benzema single-handedly flips score

When it happened: France 0, Switzerland 1 (57th & 59th minutes)

What happened: Karim Benzema was invisible for most of the game. Then all of a sudden he exploded with two goals in three minutes. The first was a classy finish — the second was opportunistic.

Instant fan reaction: What a player. That’s world-class stuff. He does nothing all game and then goes off. France's coach Didier Deschamps is definitely glad he called him up now. You have to feel for Switzerland. That penalty kick save was a back breaker.

Getty images

Pogba’s sick goal & celebration(s)

When it happened: France 2, Switzerland 1 (75th minute)

What happened: Paul Pogba picked out the top right corner on a spectacular, long-distance goal to make it 3-1. That was a stunner.

Instant fan reaction: That was unreal! Pogba’s unreal! He made it look so easy. Pogba is the man. This France team is so good. They can turn it on whenever they want to. France is definitely heading to the quarterfinals now. They are too good to be eliminated.

Swiss tie it in the 90th minute

When it happened: France 3, Switzerland 2 (90th minute)

What happened: Swiss sub Mario Gavranovic equalizes. He had only one thing in mind when he got the ball, and maneuvered his way for an unstoppable shot from the top of the box.

Instant fan reaction: Are you serious! Another two-goal comeback? Another extra-time game? What a stunner for France. What a punch to the gut. Let’s see if they can come back from this. Switzerland has been good today. That’s actually a well-deserved equalizer. Ricardo Rodriguez is off the hook. Relief for him.

Getty Images

France come this close to a winner

When it happened: France 3, Switzerland 3 (94th minute)

What happened: With seconds to go in regulation, France’s Kingsley Coman collected a cross in the box and nearly found the top right corner, but it went off the woodwork. That would’ve been some winner.

Instant fan reaction: Oooooohhhh. If he keeps that just a hair lower, it’s going in. That would’ve been cruel for Switzerland, but it would’ve been an all-time ending for a knockout match. This game is crazy. Crazier than Spain-Croatia.

Mbappe’s PK stopped, France is out

When it happened: France 3, Switzerland 3 (PK shootout, final kick)

What happened: Kylian Mbappe had to score to keep France alive in the shootout. But Yann Sommer saved his shot and Switzerland puled off the upset. Mbappe looked like he wanted a retake, but the refs don't give it. That was a really good save. The Swiss are going to the quarterfinals.

Instant fan reaction: Holy cow, Switzerland’s going through. Can’t believe it! Mbappe of all players! You just felt it was going to happen. That was a lot of pressure on him. He probably wanted to be the fifth penalty taker. This game trumped the previous one … we got everything that Croatia-Spain had, plus a PK shootout and an upset on top of that.

Tyler, the Creator Says People Forget He's a Rapper: 'Don’t Let the Wig Get It Twisted' - Complex

forget.indah.link

Tyler, The Creator loves hip-hop and he doesn’t want you to forget it.

The Call Me If You Get Lost MC caught up with Billboard briefly Sunday at the BET Awards—where he put on a performance to remember of “Lumberjack”—and discussed people forgetting that he can really spit.

“I just love rap so godamn much,” Tyler shared, “listening to [The] Dedication with [Lil] Wayne, and We Got It For Cheap with Clipse, they really shaped me into who I am. I think a lot of people forget that I’m a rapper because I’m so multifaceted. I just had to remind everyone, ‘Don’t let the wig get it twisted, y’all niggas can’t fuck with me.’”

Of course, Call Me If You Get Lost follows Tyler’s 2019 effort Igor, which took home the Grammy for Best Rap Album despite being a sonic departure from his previous records. While he was happy to get some love from the Recording Academy in 2020, he wasn’t all that pleased with the category his album was placed in.

“On one side I’m just grateful that what I made could be acknowledged in a world like this,” Tyler said after winning the award in 2020. “But also it sucks that whenever we—and I mean guys that look like me—do anything that’s genre-bending or anything they always put it in a Rap or Urban category.”

Tyler also opened up to Billboard about his love for Detroit rap, specifically collaborator 42 Dugg, who appears on track “Lemonhead.”

“Detroit guys are different breeds,” Tyler explained. “The way [guys like] 42 Dugg and Babyface Ray articulate stuff, you can hear they grew up around OG pimps. It’s interesting, I love it.”

Forget Meme Stocks and Cryptocurrency: This Healthcare IPO Could Make You Richer - Motley Fool

forget.indah.link

With so many stories happening at once in the financial markets -- inflation, jobs, meme stocks, cryptocurrency -- it would have been easy to miss the initial public offering (IPO) of a fast-growing digital platform for doctors. Investors who overlook it might be missing a transformational company before its growth really takes off.

Doximity (NYSE:DOCS) made its debut this week and promptly doubled on its first day of trading. The company has an enviable roster of customers, and financial results that set it apart from most other high-flying tech companies. Digging deeper highlights just how many things the company has going for it.

A doctor looking at a cell phone.

Impressive penetration in the industry

The company has been compared to LinkedIn for doctors. That's far too simplistic a description. But it's understandable since more than 80% of U.S. physicians are members. In fact, the company is so focused on doctors that it set aside shares and allowed doctors to participate in the IPO. More than 10,000 took advantage.

Its reach extends beyond individual docs. The company also claims to have the top 20 pharmaceutical companies, as well as the top 20 hospitals and health systems as clients. The extent of those relationships is unclear. But the ecosystem it is creating is quickly becoming an integral part of how many physicians perform their work.

Docs and dorks

Despite the comparison to a professional network, the platform offers many productivity tools beyond just connecting with other physicians. Co-founder and chief strategy officer Nate Gross jokes that the company is a mix of 'docs and dorks'. The combination is producing time-saving applications that doctors love.

For instance, the dialer tool allows physicians to contact patients from their cellphones while displaying their office number. This enables them to make the best use of their time while keeping personal information private. Similarly, the video dialer sends patients a 'no reply' text link for video calls. That extended the telehealth application it launched early in the pandemic.

The platform also has a newsfeed. It is a curated stream of the latest medical news and research. This feed can be highly targeted to a physician's specialty. The hiring solutions function offers a digital recruiting channel to help staff vacancies and manage their own careers. With over 100,000 reviews on Apple's App Store, Doximity rates a 4.8 out of five.

The platform is free to doctors. Revenue comes from paying clients such as health systems and pharmaceutical companies. That revenue is generated through subscriptions that tend to grow over time. The company's net revenue retention -- a measure of how much the same customers spend year over year -- was 153% for the year ending March 2021. That's outstanding. And it isn't the only impressive financial metric.

Growth and profits

The company hasn't taken cash from investors for the past seven years. It turns out, it hasn't needed to. Not only is the company cash flow positive, Doximity has generated profits in each of the past three years. The financials show the platform is scaling nicely. As sales have grown, profit margins have expanded.

Fiscal Year* Revenue Revenue Growth Operating Margin
2021 $206.9 million 78% 26%
2020 $116.4 million 36% 19%
2019 $85.7 million NA 8%

Data source: Doximity; *fiscal year ends March 31.

Looking forward

Despite the profits, investors will have to keep an eye on costs. In the three years the company shares in its initial filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), both research and development and sales and marketing costs dropped as a percent of revenue. That could mean management didn't need to invest as much to grow. On the other hand, general and administrative expenses (G&A) have remained steady.

Headcount in the most recent fiscal year was up 139%, while G&A expenses climbed 122%. In its filing, management pointed to its acquisition of a healthcare staffing company as the culprit. At a price-to-sales multiple of 48, Wall Street expects management to spend money on growth. As the top line continues expanding, it will want to see those non-growth expense ratios come down.

Doximity's platform has the potential to play a unique role in the changing healthcare industry. With so much of a doctor's productivity dependent on technology built without user experience in mind, the company could be an important catalyst for reducing physician burnout. Similar to Veeva Systems' use of cloud computing to streamline the life sciences industry, Doximty could do the same for physician workflows. The industry has missed in most of its attempts to work smarter not harder over the years. Doximity might be the tool that changes that.

This article represents the opinion of the writer, who may disagree with the “official” recommendation position of a Motley Fool premium advisory service. We’re motley! Don't Forget About Tyrell Ajian - kentuckysportsradio.com

forget.indah.link

Photo By Jacob Noger | UK Football

This week I’ll be focusing on Kentucky starters that may be flying under the radar. These players are essential and will play vital roles in the 2021 season. First up is strong safety Tyrell Ajian.

Tyrell Ajian is a 6’0, 190-pound senior safety from Mansfield, Ohio. Ajian has played a great deal of meaningful snaps during his Wildcat career and plays a key role in Kentucky’s safety/nickel group that should serve as a defensive strength. He joins free safety Yusuf Corker and nickel Davonte Robinson in constructing a trio of senior veterans in the back third of the UK defense.

Tyrell Ajian - Kentucky - safety

Tyrell Ajian was a tremendous recruiting get for Vince Marrow out of Ohio. He was rated as a 4-star prospect by Rivals, ESPN, and 247Sports. Looking back on his recruitment, I placed incredible value on Ajian’s multiple skill set. This is a trait that projects to versatility at the next level that is described in the old football saying, “The more (positions) you can play, the more you will play on Saturdays.” He excelled at defensive back, receiver, and quarterback for Madison Comprehensive. The versatile athlete also scored over 1,000 points on the basketball court. He eventually chose UK over Michigan, Michigan State, and West Virginia.

Ajian started ten games last season. He totaled 48 tackles, intercepted one pass, forced a fumble, and recorded one pass breakup in 2020. His best game came in the Gator Bowl against North Carolina State after registering a career-high seven tackles. He also blocked field goal against the Wolfpack. 2019 saw the safety play in 12 games with two starts. He recorded 17 tackles and added an interception as well as a pass breakup. Ajian’s redshirt freshman year produced 10 tackles, 3 pass breakups, and an interception during the Wildcats’ Citrus Bowl Championship season.

Tyrell Ajian has been a consistent contributor with the propensity for making big plays. He was a solid starter at the strong safety position a year ago. His return to the lineup bolsters the Wildcat defense that will be fielding new starters at cornerback. The Corker-Robinson-Ajian back-line will benefit Brad White’s defense and act as the tone-setters for explosive plays in 2021.

What Does All This Mean?

Safety Yusuf Corker is an All-SEC performer and longtime starter that is garnering preseason praise from most outlets. Davonte Robinson’s decision to return to Lexington for an additional year of eligibility was an enormous bonus for the Wildcat secondary; however, Tyrell Ajian is the defender that is not being discussed enough and is projected to be a “Havoc” producer in 2021.

Forget cicadas. Ticks are your dog's worst enemy this summer. Here's how to get them off - CNET

Check your dog for ticks at least once a day.

cunfek/GettyImages

I hadn't realized how many ticks were in my yard until I spotted several of the tiny, bitey bugs clinging to a small dachshund I was watching for my family this spring. Thinking they were small moles on the dog's stomach, I flashed my phone's light over the area only to discover little legs attached to the brown bumps that were making a meal of poor Kobi.

Tick season ramped up early this year, with the little arachnids latching on to any host they can find. In fact, the tick population is about 15% larger than usual, making 2021 the "tick time bomb" year. Every state is affected by at least one out of the seven ticks found in the US, all of which experts tell me can transmit diseases. And like me, many people who are new dog guardians, or owners of indoor-outdoor pets, may not think to check their furry friend for ticks after they've been roaming through tall grass and wooded areas where ticks tend to nest. That puts pets at a higher risk of getting sick, and could potentially give ticks that haven't burrowed into your pet a place to hide out in your home, waiting for their next meal. That might even be you.

Yes, there is a right way to remove ticks from your beloved pet, and there are some methods the experts I spoke with said you shouldn't use -- they could potentially harm your furball. I'll also explain how to help keep ticks off your dog and when it's time to take your pet to the vet.

Which diseases do ticks cause in pets?

Several diseases stem from ticks that have latched onto your pet for hours on end. If you're concerned your dog might have a tick-borne disease, a heartworm test for tick diseases can show if your pet has been exposed, according to Dr. Todd Ray, a veterinarian at the Leitchfield Veterinary Clinic in Kentucky. Here are two of the most common diseases dogs get from tick bites.

Ehrlichia: This is the hardest tick disease to prevent, Ray told me, and the most common tick-borne illness that dogs test positive for. Ticks can transmit ehrlichia in as little as three hours and it can be deadly for dogs. They'll go through three phases of illnesses where their blood platelet count will drop, they'll become extremely sick and could experience abnormal bleeding, according to Veterinary Partner, a pet health resource center for veterinarians.

Lyme disease: Prevalent in dogs, this disease has relatively minor effects on canines. Ray says the most common symptom of Lyme disease in dogs is that they experience painful swelling in their joints that can make a dog unable to use its legs. If left untreated, it can lead to kidney failure, as well as serious cardiac and neurological effects. Other symptoms include fever and loss of appetite, according to the American Kennel Club. The tick has to be attached for 36 to 48 hours before it transmits the disease.

If your pet is experiencing any of these symptoms, you should take them to a vet immediately.

How can you make sure you've removed all the parts of a tick from your dog?

It's fairly easy to tell if you've removed the entire tick, if you know what you're looking for, according to Ian Williams, entomologist and technical services manager at Orkin, which is part of the largest pest control company in the US. If you're not careful, the tick's head and mouth parts could get left behind and potentially cause an infection, but won't increase your pet's risk of disease (more below).

The best way to make sure to completely remove a tick is using tweezers. The goal is to grab the tick by its head as close to the skin as possible, Williams said.

You want to avoid squeezing too hard because you could crush the tick, making it harder to remove. Once you've got a good grip on the tick, pull straight back and not sideways -- otherwise the tick's mouth parts could be left behind. Williams says the tick will release itself.

What if you don't remove all the tick parts from your dog or cat's skin?

After removing a tick, clean the area with soap and water to sanitize the area and wash away any clinging parts. If mouth parts from the tick were left in when you tried extracting the tick, Williams says that won't pose a disease threat to your pet. If you can, try removing the parts left behind with tweezers to help avoid infections. If that's not possible, you should leave it alone and let the skin heal, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

However, you should continue to monitor the area, as well as your dog or cat's symptoms, as it could take weeks to months before symptoms begin to show. If symptoms appear, you should take your pet to the vet to get analyzed (more below on signs it's time to visit the vet).

Also note that while not every individual tick carries diseases -- in fact, only females can transmit illness -- the young nymphs that are responsible for 90% of the spread in humans are about the size of a poppyseed, making it difficult to tell they're on your pet. It's best to remove all ticks and take other preventative measures in your yard to keep the populations from spreading (keep reading for tips).

5 methods never to use for removing ticks and why

There are home remedies that you shouldn't use on your pets -- or even on yourself -- when removing ticks. They will not work, according to the experts I spoke with.

  • Never use a match or fire to try to get a tick to release itself. This can cause burn wounds on your pet's skin.
  • Soap and water won't expel a tick. This is best used for cleaning the affected area after you've removed the tick.
  • Alcohol. Save this for cleaning the area, not killing the tick.
  • Never try to dig a tick out with a knife or other sharp object. Not only will this be painful for your pet, but it can potentially cause an infection if the object isn't sterilized.
  • Covering the tick in oil to "suffocate" it is a no-no. The goal is to remove the tick as quickly as possible to keep it from transmitting disease -- don't wait for it to detach itself.

How often should you check your dog for ticks?

Ideally, you may want to check your dog for ticks any time you let it back into the house. But that's not always possible, so if your dog or cat goes outside, at least check it daily. You can stretch the time between tick checks if your pet takes tick medication. Your yard maintenance also plays a critical role (I'll explain more below).

Again, timing is important for removing ticks to lower the risk of your pet getting a disease.

Areas of your dog you need to check for ticks

Ticks try to find areas of the skin that have folds where they can hide. When checking your dog for ticks, the CDC says to look behind and inside the ears, under the collar, under the tail and between the toes. Also check around your pet's eyelids, under the front legs and between the back legs.

In case a tick is present on your pet but hasn't yet latched on, it's safe practice to wear gloves when checking your dog for ticks, Williams says. This is to prevent the tick from attaching itself to you instead.

At what point should you take your dog to a vet?

When you remove a tick from your dog, you can save it for testing and identification. It's best to keep it alive, if possible, according to the Lyme Disease Association, and to place it in an airtight container or zip-close bag.

As for your pet, most tick-borne diseases won't show up until four to eight weeks after the tick bite, Ray says. You can make a note of when you found the tick on your dog and keep an eye on symptoms. For instance, if your pet shows signs of malaise or can't hold food down, it may be time to take it to the vet.

You should also monitor the area around the tick bite. If you notice hair loss, redness or inflammation, that's a sign of an abnormal bite. A veterinarian can assess the area and screen for tick-borne diseases.

Mow your grass to help keep ticks away.

Brian Bennett/CNET

How to keep ticks off your dog

Vaccines aren't available for most tick-borne diseases that dogs can get, according to the CDC. That's why it's important to take preventative measures to keep ticks from burrowing into your pets.

A tick repellent is one of the best methods. Dr. Byron Blagburn, a professor and researcher of veterinary parasitology at Auburn University, recommends two topical medications as being extremely effective against ticks: Vectra 3D and Advantix. He told me they may not kill ticks immediately.

Chewable tablets -- for instance, NexGard -- are also recommended by Blagburn as they go into the dog's bloodstream and kill ticks that latch on. It works because the tick absorbs the oral treatment and dies.

And yes, you can give your dog both the topical and oral treatments. Ray, the Kentucky veterinarian, advises giving your dog the oral treatment on the first of the month and applying the topical treatment halfway through the month (or on the 15th). Treatments are most effective when you space them out.

Note that you should never use human products that repel ticks on animals. Always ask your veterinarian before using products on your pets.

Landscaping your yard also helps keep ticks away

Maintaining your yard and keeping your grass mowed is another way to help keep ticks away. This is because they tend to linger in areas with tall grass and brush, waiting to grab onto their next meal. Leaving wide pathways and margins between your yard and house could help reduce your exposure to ticks, for both you and your furry friend.

If you live near a wooded area that's harder to maintain, Williams, the Orkin entomologist, suggests using pesticides labeled for ticks around that area. You can also separate your yard from the woods with mulch (this can prevent tall grasses from shooting up) or put up a fence to prevent your dog from bounding into tick-infested areas.

Now that you know how to keep your pets safe, here's how to protect yourself from Lyme disease, a serious tick-borne illness in humans.

Forget AT&T: Here Are 3 Better Dividend Stocks - Motley Fool

forget.indah.link

I finally moved on from AT&T (NYSE:T) last month. I had owned the popular wireless carrier since 2018, but AT&T moving on from WarnerMedia while warning that it would be dramatically reducing its dividend was a one-two punch I couldn't ignore.

If AT&T is no longer a media empire or a Dividend Aristocrat is it really worth still owning? It may become attractive over time, but right now Verizon Communications, (NYSE:VZ), Target (NYSE:TGT), and Tanger Factory Outlet Centers (NYSE:SKT) are better dividend stocks. Let's kick those tires.

A person approaching a piggy bank with a hammer.

1. Verizon: 4.5% yield

Verizon's 4.5% trailing yield may pale in comparison to the 7.2% that AT&T has paid out over the past year, but that's about to change. AT&T will slash its payout by nearly half after its WarnerMedia deal is complete. Meanwhile we have Verizon likely increasing its quarterly dividend in two months the way it has for the past 14 years.

Verizon isn't perfect. It sees top-line growth increasing just 2% in 2021. It also has some big investments to make as it cashes in on the 5G revolution. However, there is an opportunity to gain market share on AT&T if its rival loses focus during the transition process. Verizon is also trading for just 11 times this year's earnings, and it bears pointing out that it has beaten Wall Street's profit targets in all four of the past reports.

2. Target: 1.5% yield

Target is next on the list. The "cheap chic" retailer packs the lowest yield on this list, but it's the only active Dividend Aristocrat. Target has increased its quarterly distributions for 49 consecutive years.

A big reason for the yield being so low is that the stock has appreciated significantly because it's doing so well. Target has more than doubled over the past year. The mass market retailer thrived in the pandemic. Target didn't have to close down during the early stages of the COVID-19 crisis, providing essentials to get folks through the lockdown.

Comps have topped 20% for four consecutive quarters, and the 22.9% surge it posted in its latest fiscal quarter is stacked on top of a 10.8% increase a year earlier. Digital sales are booming, but more to Target's prowess here is its ability to drum up in-store traffic and curbside pickup volume.

3. Tanger Factory Outlet Centers: 3.8% yield

We're shopping at brick-and-mortar stores again, but we still want to get more bang for our buck. The same thesis that is driving retail traffic to Target is also at play at Tanger, an operator of three dozen open-air shopping centers loaded with discount outlets for top brands.

Traffic was at 97% of 2019 levels in its latest quarter -- two-year comparisons are so much more noteworthy these days -- and it hit 100% early in the current quarter. Occupancy rate is still not where it used to be, but that will change as it refreshes its tenant mix coming out of the pandemic. This is a yield that could be on the rise later this year, as Tanger is paying just half as much as it was before the COVID-19 crisis. As a real estate investment trust (REIT) Tanger Factory Outlet Centers will pass on its increasing profits to shareholders.

Verizon, Target, and Tanger Factory Outlet Centers should all be increasing their payout in the coming months. AT&T is going the other way.

This article represents the opinion of the writer, who may disagree with the “official” recommendation position of a Motley Fool premium advisory service. We’re motley! Questioning an investing thesis -- even one of our own -- helps us all think critically about investing and make decisions that help us become smarter, happier, and richer.

Reusse: Twins forget fans with flimsy excuse for rainout - Minneapolis Star Tribune

forget.indah.link

The Twins spent the first three months of the season alienating fans in large numbers. They did this with uninspired play featuring bad pitching, failed hitting and erratic fielding. They also did this through a TV partner, Bally Sports North, that has made games unavailable to a large majority of streamers, which means a large majority of potential viewers 40 and under.

Then there's the fact the big-league product has plenty of problems of its own, with games that drag on interminably, filled with strikeouts and long minutes without seeing a ball hit into fair territory.

The Twins were not satisfied with this hat trick of disappointment, disappearance and languor.

They upped the ante on Saturday, spitting in the eye of customers who had commuted to downtown, paid for their parking ($12, in most cases) and were ready to watch a 1:10 p.m. contest with Cleveland.

If that spitting part was more than a symbolic description, it would have been more moisture than the fans encountered before it was announced a half-hour after game time that this contest was being postponed until September.

At that moment, the tarp was not covering the infield. Instead, there was an individual seen watering the dirt.

If you don't see the podcast player, tap here to listen.

The official excuse for the postponement was a forecast for heavy rain through the afternoon. I had a retired U.S. Marine meteorologist who was with me take a look at the radar on his computer around 2 p.m., and he said: "This looks like it is going to stay south.''

The Twins had more thorough information at their disposal. One must think that their weather consultants were not capable of being so far off to say, "For the safety of the men, women and children gathered here, we better drop the idea of playing a game this afternoon,'' and then have it turn out that the official Twin Cities rainfall total over the 24 hours ending at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at MSP airport was 0.12 inches.

That's as much spittle as it takes for one of those COVID tests.

Manager Rocco Baldelli didn't want to play because the Twins had gone with a "bullpen'' game in Friday's loss. In other words, he didn't want to play because neither Danny Coulombe nor Griffin Jax would be available, which might be the worst excuse for blowing off a big-league game since Mike Veeck's Disco Demolition Night at Comiskey Park.

You couldn't really blame Doc Roc, the manager who was living by "abundance of caution'' with his athletes even before that replaced "E Pluribus Unum'' as our national motto during the pandemic.

I mean, his team hadn't had a day off since way back on Wednesday, so obviously the pitching staff had to be exhausted.

Cleveland manager Terry Francona was easy to convince as a co-conspirator on this ploy, with most of his previously excellent starting rotation on the injured list.

Only one problem here: The customers.

It's a disgrace Twins management went along with Baldelli's desire not to play. You can't rain out a game on manager's whim. Heavy rain has to be definite, not 50-50. Or, in this case, 20-80.

Tim Charbonneau from Savage responded on this subject in my Twitter feed with a photo of his sons, Landon, 3, and Harrison, 5, standing in the sun at the ballpark, trying to figure out why Dad's exciting promise of this trip to Target Field was not going to include a ballgame.

Dad said there were tears at one point from his sons.

Twins attendance has been a flop since pandemic restrictions were softened. Still, there might have been 18,000 on Saturday. Traditionally, summer weekends are when families from around the area plan their one or two trips a season to Target Field.

Come Saturday:

They arrive, pay their $12 to park, let the kids make a first run to a concession stand, and then they look at the field and wonder where are the players, getting loose, ready for a ballgame.

Then comes the delay, followed by the announcement there would be no game, and even the kids squint into the sun and ask, "Why not?''

The pox of this Twins season, of poor play and poor access, was joined on Saturday afternoon with a total disregard for fans willing to make the effort and pay the freight to be at the ballpark.

All because Colombe and Jax were unavailable, and to not have J.A. Happ start against the White Sox in Chicago on Monday night.

The price paid for that by the Twins was shameful disregard for the Saturday customers that saw this as a special occasion for the summer.

Boo, hiss!

Forget Silly String: To battle enemy drone swarms, USAF has THOR - DroneDJ

forget.indah.link

The US Air Force is clearly serious about combatting the growing threat of small drones deployed for terrorism or hostile military purposes. It has not only developed a weapon capable of taking out scores of drones simultaneously, but it has even named that mighty asset after a fearsome, hammer-wielding Norse god-dash-superhero.

THOR takes out hundreds of enemy drones at once

Earlier this month, the Air Force unveiled its Tactical High Power Operational Responder – aka THOR – which is designed to instantly neutralize multiple attacking drones, including enemy swarms. Developed by the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), the electromagnetic weapon has successfully zapped hundreds of hostile uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAV) in test battles. Once approaching craft is identified, THOR generates a powerful microwave field that wrecks the internal electronics systems of enemy drones before that can get too near. In that way, belligerent swarms become little mounds of grounded junk in the blink of an eye.

THOR is a significant departure from – and valuable addition to – existing techniques of combatting small, weaponized drones. Most systems rely on lasers or ballistics that, while efficient against isolated craft, can be overrun by larger groups of hostile UAV. The same limitation applies to the mobile weapon the Air Force introduced earlier this month that hog-ties targets with wads of Silly String material. THOR, by contrast, is a bit like using a mallet against a dangerous fly – only, in its case, one so large it can whack an entire cloud of them in a single blow.

“The system uses high power microwaves to cause a counter electronic effect,” an AFRL fact sheet says. “A target is identified, the silent weapon discharges in a nanosecond and the impact is instantaneous.”

THOR impresses with more than mere might, however. It also boasts agility and remarkable ease of use.

Pricey but, per drone-dead, cheap

The entire system fits inside a single 20-foot metal cargo container, meaning it can be transported in a C-130 military helicopter. From the minute it arrives in the zone to be defended, THOR can be set up by two people inside three hours. It functions using an interface designed to limit required training to a minimum, and – as the AFRL document notes  – “operates from a simple wall plug” to obtain the energy needed to fry enemy drones.

While adaptable and easy to use, however, THOR isn’t cheap. The system cost $15 million to develop, and each unit runs $10 million. That price tag will probably limit the weapon’s initial deployment to defending vulnerable military bases from drone strikes.

Or maybe not. The AFRL says THOR’s dead-drone-per-shot ratio can make it as affordable as laser or ballistic options. Meanwhile, given the increasing attacks in Iraq and elsewhere using consumer UAV packed with explosives, THOR’s wide-scale efficiency may eventually become a defense luxury US installations can’t afford to skimp on.

“Drones are becoming more pervasive every day,” the THOR fact sheet notes. “Rather than being used as innocuous hobby systems, drones can be employed as weapons intended to cause great harm at long standoff ranges. As they become more prolific and technically mature it is imperative that there be a safe way to protect airbases against these threats.”

Meaning that when those drones come attacking in droves, it may be wiser to strike them down with the godly force of lightning and thunder than rely on single blast of Silly String.

Carole Baskin wants you to forget ‘Tiger King’ and watch ‘The Conservation Game’ - WTOP

WTOP's Jason Fraley chats with Carole Baskin (Part 1)

Hey, all you cool cats and kittens! Carole Baskin of Big Cat Rescue in Tampa, Florida, wants you to forget “Tiger King” and instead watch the new animal rights documentary, “The Conservation Game,” which just made its private D.C. premiere at the Eaton Hotel.

Just as “Blackfish” (2013) exposed animal cruelty at Sea World, director Michael Webber similarly follows retired Ohio police officer turned animal welfare activist Tim Harrison.

“I had met Tim Harrison many years ago because of the work he was doing in law enforcement to protect big cats,” Baskin told WTOP.

“He had won our Guardian Angel Award at our annual fundraiser many years ago. Through him and the work that he did in ‘The Elephant in the Living Room,’ I met Mike Webber. … I’ve known these guys forever.”

The film starts with Harrison describing how he grew up idolizing figures like Jack Hanna and Steve Irwin on late-night talk shows before learning a darker truth behind the scenes.

“[Viewers] are going to be outraged,” Baskin said. “Marlin Perkins and Jack Hanna were portrayed as conservation experts taking cute little cubs onto late-night shows. … Experts said this animal came from a particular zoo or was going to a wonderful sanctuary, but they didn’t know where they came from or where they went. Hundreds of cats are missing.”

Harrison soon recognizes their background animal handlers at shady wildlife auctions.

“He had gone to one of these awful auctions [and] saw some of the late-night faux experts buying and selling animals,” Baskin said.

“What you have to really pay attention to is not Jack Hanna, Boone Smith, Jarod Miller or Irwin on stage, look at who is bringing that cat up on stage in the background. It’s this same network of nefarious characters.”

Institutions like the Columbus Zoo were rocked by the documentary.

“They’re wearing Columbus Zoo polo shirts,” Baskin said. “Those guys didn’t work at the Columbus Zoo! Those were these backyard breeders and dealers that were going to these auctions and getting rid of the animals when they weren’t cute and cuddly anymore. … After this, the Columbus Zoo went through a big shake-up and is under new leadership.”

The zoo now supports the Big Cat Public Safety Act, which has 191 sponsors in Congress and passed last session in the House with a two-thirds bipartisan vote. It currently has 23 sponsors in the Senate, including Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio), who came on board last week.

“The Big Cat Public Safety Act is a bill that does two things,” Baskin said.

“It makes petting the cats illegal, because that’s what’s driving all of the breeding and discarding of the cubs. … It also phases out private ownership. People who have them can keep them, but they have to register that they have them and then they can’t buy or breed more.”

Such public awareness no doubt came after Netflix’s “Tiger King,” which left her cold.

“It was shocking because we had worked with the producers of ‘Tiger King’ for five years,” Baskin said.

“We were told it was going to be called ‘Stolen Wildlife,’ about exposing this horrible industry like ‘Blackfish.’ … ‘Tiger King’ was just a freak show. My husband and I binge watched it like everyone, because we couldn’t believe that’s what they produced.”

She, of course, repudiates the series’ insinuation that she killed her first husband, Don Lewis, who disappeared in 1997. She married her second husband Howard Baskin in 2004.

“I still get hate mail,” Baskin said. “It shocked me that they would take that kind of a tact because they didn’t have to. In order to make this an entertaining look at this industry, they had all the characters, they had all the crazy going on. I don’t think they needed to flip it on its head and make the only person who was trying to end this abuse be the villain.”

She said her first husband was bipolar and his death remains a mystery.

“There’s nothing [Joe Exotic] can say to justify what they’re doing to exotic animals, so their only way to combat me is to divert attention by saying, ‘Did you know she killed her husband and fed him to tigers?'” Baskin said.

“The media would say, ‘Oh my gosh, this is interesting,’ then they would do research, find out the truth and not publish those things.”

Either way, she immediately became a pop culture fixture.

“These two guys from the UK reached out to me saying they were from the Jimmy Fallon show,” Baskin said.

“They absolutely punked me. They had little clips of Jimmy Fallon saying questions and answers, then they would piece it in, so I thought I was talking to him. I got to talk about the issues, so I thought it was funny. It got 7 million views.”

She soon was competing on ABC’s “Dancing with the Stars.”

“They gave me such a gift,” Baskin said.

“It gave me the opportunity to talk about the issues on a national stage. … Even though I couldn’t dance a lick and they had to scratch me from the show by the third episode, they still continued to send media to me to talk about the important issues of saving cats in the wild and ending private possession.”

Portrayed by Saturday Night Live’s Kate McKinnon?

“Wondery had done a podcast in April 2019 called ‘Joe Exotic,'” Baskin said. “NBC said they were going to be doing this show based on the Wondery podcast. … I heard it was going to be Kate McKinnon, who is an amazing talent. She’ll give me a sense of humor.”

Where are the rest of the “Tiger King” characters today?

“Joe Exotic is serving 22 years in prison for two attempts on my life, hiring two different hit men to kill me,” Baskin said.

“Doc Antle is being sued on several wildlife trafficking and animal cruelty charges. … Tim Stark was sued by the USDA and the Department of Justice. … It was easy to make the case against Joe Exotic; he was just the dumbest one.”

Would she ever support a pardon for Joe Exotic?

“I would be all in favor of him getting a pardon … if he did two things,” Baskin said.

“He needs to work with authorities to bring down the rest of these other abusers. … He could also speak out to Congress and say, ‘We need this bill to pass.’ … He’s chosen not to, which shows he hasn’t had a change of heart. Until he does, he’s right where he belongs.”
