I made it through Hurricane Harvey with water, popcorn, oranges and dog food for my pups. I didn't stock up on canned goods, batteries or anything really though I should have.
Now, as a mother with kids and dogs, I'm much more mindful of getting prepared as Hurricane Laura heads our way.
Here are 10 things parents need to have or do before the hurricane hits:
Water. You should have enough clean water so that one gallon per person is available for at least three days. This water is for drinking and sanitation. Also, remember you dogs need water too.
Food. A 3-5-day supply of food for your kids and pets. I stocked up with applesauce, oatmeal, black beans, Cheerios, dried fruit and shelf-stable milk.
Toys. Get a water-proof tote and fill with your kids' favorite toys or stuffed animals. These may help keep your child calm during the storm.
Make an exit plan. If evacuation is necessary, known your exit plan for your kids and pets.
Secure the exterior. Bring all outside patio furniture, potted plants, bikes and toys indoors. If necessary, secure outdoor sculptures, wind chimes, etc.
Gas up. Fill your car’s gas tank, charge your cell phone in case of power outages.
First-aid kits. It’s also a good idea to have a stock of over-the-counter medicines along with prescription medicines. Don't forget Benadryl for adults and kids'. The American Red Cross offers a comprehensive checklist of what should be in an emergency first aid kit.
Wipes. Stock up on wipes and hand sanitizer. They'll come in handy for general cleaning.
Bug spray. Mosquitoes love a good storm. Keep a few cans of insect repellent in your supplies. Also, it won't hurt to have some extra flea spray for your pets.
Get your masks ready. Wash all of the family's masks in case of evacuation. You will need these clean and ready to go, should you have to go.
