(WEEK) - Friday will mark the 19th anniversary of the terror attacks on September 11th. This year firefighters across Central Illinois are making sure an annual tribute continues despite the pandemic.
Each year the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation raises money through stair climbs. This is when firefighters in full gear climb 2,226 flights of stairs or 110 stories. The same amount to get to the top of the World Trade Center.
"To put it into perspective for people its five laps around, up and down every single stair case at the Peoria Civic Center." said Minier Firefighter Nate Frankfather. Last year it took him about three hours.
Due to COVID-19, many climbs have been forced from a large group event, like the one held at the Peoria Civic Center last year, to smaller individual climbs.
A group of Minier Firefighters are coming together and will climb at ISU's Hancock Stadium to allow them plenty of room for social distancing.
The group said despite the almost two decades of time that has passed, emotions can become gut wrenching and this is about bringing people together.
"We will never forget what happened and we will never forget the firefighters and all the first responders and everybody that lost their life that day," said Minier Fire Captain Shayne Bagby, "We want to make sure that never gets forgotten and we maintain that brother and sisterhood in the midst of everything else going on in this country right now, we want to make sure to keep that bond together."
The money raised will provide assistance to the surviving families and co workers of the 343 firefighters who lost their lives.
