It happened.
Oatmeal was left out of a recipe for Apple Crisp printed here on Saturday. And several Herald readers have been heard from online and on the telephone. They are asking about the oatmeal.
Yes, it’s needed. So start with 4 to 5 cups of sliced apples in buttered 8-by-8-inch baking pan. Cover apples with 1 cup of white sugar. Combine other ingredients including ½ cup each of flour, oatmeal, brown sugar and butter along with 1 teaspoon each of nutmeg and cinnamon.
Mix the ingredients with a fork until crumbly. Place over apple mixture. Then bake 45 minutes at 350 degrees.
Suggestions are to serve warm with whipped or ice cream.
Thanksgiving in Winnipeg
Life goes on in October although coronavirus moved in and took out homecoming festivities at UND. There was no game. No parade. No band playing. But the words to the major fight song linger on:
“Stand up and cheer. Stand up and cheer for North Dakota. Pledge your loyalty. For she’s your Alma Mater true.
“Our team is fighting, and we will help them see it through. We’ve got the team. We’ve got the steam. So North Dakota here’s to you.”
The old grads weren’t back this year. But now ghosts and goblins are showing up all around the Forks.
Six feet up, under
People in Winnipeg are digesting Thanksgiving dinners after the observance Monday. Friends to the north were limited to small gatherings of under 10.
A good natured resident of Winnipeg comments, “Social distancing and masks are the options. But if it’s six feet apart or six feet under, I prefer the first.”
Marilyn Alexander is overlooking the Red River as it flows North and the leaves turn into enchanting colors. She comments, “With all that beauty, it is hard to believe there is coronavirus lurking in the air.”
She says, “Six months ago we were hoarding toilet paper, wiping down groceries. Now we have learned what works. Social distancing and masks may suck. But we have only two options – six feet apart or six feet under. And I prefer the first .’’
Space heaters
So life goes on. There are more calls in the fall for fire prevention. Furnaces go on. Space heaters are needed.
The focus for this year’s fire prevention week was on safe cooking in the kitchen. And there’s an extra effort to teach children at home the safest fire escape routes.
Grand Forks has five fire stations with headquarters located at Demers and S. Washington Street. Last year there were 5,622 medical and fire calls.
