Small business owners will never forget (letter to the editor) - SILive.com

Disappointed is an understatement at this point. I am disgusted with Governor Cuomo’s vengeful tactics against the small businesses in New York state, as 99.9% of small business owners have experienced dramatically negative effects of this governor’s totalitarianism tactics through losses in revenue due to the stifled earning capacity, increases in expenses, or both. A prolific number of businesses have shuttered their doors permanently. What further disgusts me are his actions against business owners in my hometown. As reported in the Staten Island Advance, Governor Cuomo has stated that “Staten Island is a serious problem” and is headed for the “Red Zone.”

The Red Zone for small businesses means that “nonessential businesses are required to close.” That’s 66.6% of job providers — the small businesses. Throughout the entire year, the actions on the part of the governor have been nothing but dangerous and, quite frankly, tyrannical to the small business owners. To deem Staten Island (specifically) as a “Red Zone” is a political revenge tactic because most of Staten Island strongly disapproves of him and they did that by sending a message to him at the ballot box this year.

And, he’s scapegoating business owners to bolster his own political agenda. The clear dichotomy is stated in this question: “How come Florida, under Governor Ron DeSantis, can have an open economy and a lot less deaths than New York, but yet, New York has to enact autocratic rule on our small businesses and New York has a lot more deaths?” Furthermore, the population of Florida is 2 million greater than New York.

The point that I am raising is that the governor’s actions are wrong for small businesses and, quite frankly, I believe small business owners should file a massive lawsuit to prevent a Red Zone from happening and, come 2022, campaign very hard to make sure that Governor Cuomo does not get a fourth term in Albany.

Furthermore, I want to hold two other politicians accountable. Bill de Blasio and James Oddo are just as complicit. Mayor de Blasio has doubled down on Cuomo’s agenda, even going as far as not having a concrete plan for re-opening because “some people do a lot who have the resources” said he. He also committed other atrocious actions by adding his own rules onto the governor’s regulatory manifesto. Moreover, Borough President Oddo has failed miserably in advocating for the interests of Staten Island businesses who are the victims of authoritarianism by the governor. Most recently, he supported the governor’s agenda to close the economy and to encroach on families who are celebrating the Thanksgiving holiday.

Let me make clear that we small business owners will continue the good fight. We will make our voices heard, explicitly and actionably. We will vote and we will campaign.

Let me conclude by stating that we’re not rich or complacent. We just want to support our families and the community. We will never forget what they did to us.
