Nathaniel Rateliff and Elle King have teamed up for a new holiday single to benefit The Marigold Project, Rateliff’s charitable foundation dedicated to economic, social, and racial justice. Entitled, “Xmas to Forget”, the new track released this week also features Rateliff’s backing band The Night Sweats and hears the two recognizing the awful year that was with a lively mix of music complete with bells and shared singing from the two artists.
Both Rateliff and King take turns on the all-too-relatable lyrics that include, “I’m flying into Christmas and it’s been an awful year/I’m flying into Christmas cause no one else is here” and “It’s gonna take time, speed, liquor and wine to get there/And this God damn year doesn’t seem fair/Well the only thing I’m wrapping up is my regrets/So let’s make this a Christmas to forget.”
“Elle and I had been talking about working on a couple of tunes and doing a version of one of the Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers Christmas songs,” Rateliff adds in a statement. “But as we were working on it we decided it would be fun to write our own. Joseph (of the Night Sweats) said we should write a Christmas to forget in reference to how hard this year has been for everyone so we ran with the idea.”
King also added, “Well considering it’s been a pretty tough year and the big ‘togetherness’ theme of the holidays is less than ideal, we thought the best way to communicate that was through song. And if we’re all ending out the year in flames, let’s do it laughing. Here’s to a Christmas to forget.”
