TUCSON (KVOA) - Jan. 8, 2011 - this is a date that Tucson will never forget.
But with the 10-year anniversary arriving this January, the Old Pueblo will hold a special ceremony to ensure the six people who died that day will never be forgotten.
On Friday, Pima County announced that a commemorative ceremony will be held at the Historic County Courthouse at 10 a.m. Jan. 8 to honor the victims, survivors and first-responders of the tragedy that took place during former Rep. Gabrielle Gifford's "Congress on Your Corner" event at a Casas Adobes Safeway nearly 10 years ago.
A memorial, which is located just west of the Historic Courthouse in El Presidio Park, will be dedicated during the ceremony.
Officials say the memorial, dubbed "Embrace" aims to tell the story of that day through features such as "sloping walls that depict symbols embodying the values and interests held by each of the six people who died and the 13 survivors," officials say.
This year's ceremony will also feature a presentation of flags from an honor guard, an opening prayer offered by Rev. Joe Fitzgerald, remarks from Ron Barber who was wounded in the attack and an eight-minute video reviewing the events of that day, how the memorial came to be and reactions from the survivors and family members of victims who have already toured the memorial.
Also following the tradition of ceremonies in years passed, a bell ringing will be held at exactly 10:10 a.m. - the first shots were fired.
