Why did they forget the other half of the 580-680 interchange? Roadshow - The Mercury News

Q: Going from Interstate 680 to 580 is nice because they did a flyover, but they forgot about going from west 580 to south 680, which is terrible.

Shannon Brown

A: Terrible is too kind a description as drivers must try to safely weave their way through a couple of very nasty merges. Work on a direct connection from west 580 to south 680 toward Silicon Valley is planned and will cost about $20 million. However, that money is not yet in the bank and it is far down the list of improvements to be paid for by a sales tax in Alameda County over the next decade.

But here is a project that may take the pressure off the 580 to 680 interchange: a new four-lane expressway through Niles Canyon that will connect 580 and 680.

Q: Work pretty much has stopped on Highway 84 to Interstate 680. When will crews return?

Gene Hastings, Fremont

A: Caltrans is scheduled to begin widening from south of Ruby Hill Drive to I-680 and the Highway 84/I-680 interchange this spring. Tree removal should be completed by February. Widening will be completed in 2024.

Here is what else is on tap in this area:

  • Concrete barriers in the median.
  • Shoulder rumble strips between the lanes and shoulders.
  • Consolidate existing vehicle access openings, private driveways, and rural roads to new frontage roads
  • Realign the on-ramp from Paloma Way to south I-680.
  • Reconstruct the off-ramp from north 680.
  • Build a flyover ramp from Calaveras Road to north 680, and construct a new on-ramp from Calaveras to north 84
  • Realign the south 84 to north -680 connector to merge with the northbound on-ramp to I-680 from Calavera
  • Extend the express lane on south 680 north approximately 2 miles

Q: I need your help! I’m a senior who has been trying in vain to renew my driver’s license online. When I put in “www.dmv.ca.gov” as directed on my renewal notice, a message comes up “Safari can not open this page.” I don’t want to go into a DMV office to renew, so what can I do?

Michael Babcock, Margalynne Armstrong, Ed Barrett and others

A: A recent version of  Safari is among the list of browsers that DMV says should work. You might try (in order) refreshing the page, relaunching the browser or clearing the Safari cache.  The DMV’s other recommended browsers are recent versions of Microsoft Internet Explorer or Microsoft Edge, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome  and Opera.

Q: I was gratified to see your recent columns on the 101-87 interchange, as that will be my primary route home for hopefully many years to come. In just a few weeks of having driven in this area, I’m getting convinced that the dangerous dive bombers here might be worse than at 280 south to 380 east in San Bruno.

Chuck Martin, San Jose

A: Dive bombers are everywhere, but the new design from south 101 to south 87 should help as you will be able to exit from both of the far right lanes, rather than just one.
