Web browser Vivaldi has introduced a new feature that makes it much easier to manage tabs.
Vivaldi - which is based on the same Chromium engine as Google Chrome - already offered “Tab Stacks”, which allow you to group different tabs together so that they only take up the space of a single tab.
Now Vivaldi is introducing Two-Level Tab Stacks, which basically introduces a secondary row of tabs along the top of the browser window.
This new feature lets you keep stacks of tabs for different projects or purposes. So, you might have Tab Stacks dedicated to ‘work’ and ‘personal’ sites in the top row, with the tabs in that stack appearing in the second row when you click on that stack.
Tab Stacks can be renamed to make them easier to identify at a glance. So, in the example shown below, Tab Stacks are renamed ‘News’ and ‘Social’, with only the sites in the active tab (in this case ‘News’) being shown in the secondary row. The number of tabs in each stack is displayed on the far right of the Tab Stack.
MORE FOR YOU
Vivaldi, very much a power-user browser, already offered a multitude of different ways to handle tabs. Aside from the option to have tabs running down the side of the browser window, it also offers Tab Tiling, where the screen can be divided vertically or horizontally, with each section displaying the contents of a different tab.
Tab Cycling allows the user to scroll through open tabs using the Crtrl + Tab keyboard shortcut, while it’s possible to jump straight to a specific tab by pressing Alt/⌘ + the number of the tab, with 1 being the tab on the furthest left of the screen.
The new features should be available in the latest version of the Vivaldi desktop browser, which is being released today.
