Remember who did this to us. Do not let the passage of time or the currency of other events dim your memory. Never forget what Donald Trump did last week. Never forget that he incited an attack on our republic by a traitorous mob.
Remember Sens. Josh Hawley and Ted Cruz, too. They set the stage for insurrection. Missouri’s Hawley greeted the mob with a raised fist before the attack, and he was later nailed in a Kansas City Star editorial titled, “Sen. Josh Hawley has blood on his hands in Capitol coup attempt.”
Cruz, in the days before the violence, helped Hawley feed Trump’s big lie that the presidential election was stolen, stoking the misguided grievances of the mob. Cruz owns this forever, too.
There will be other names that we will learn in time and must remember, but for now these three are a good start.
Before the assault, Trump told the mob to march on Congress as it tabulated electoral votes, “Because you will never take back our country with weakness.” After ginning up their anger with red meat fighting words and promising that he would walk with them, Trump skulked back to the safety of the White House.
And the mob stormed the Capitol in a violent attempt to overthrow our government — trashing the symbols of our democracy, fighting with police, causing elected officials and staff to don gas masks and shelter in place. A police officer was killed and four others died, one shot to death.
All of this happened because Trump, a self-proclaimed tough guy, can’t even lose an election without falling apart. He has threatened election officials, pressured state legislators and filed scores of groundless lawsuits. This attack was just his latest un-American outrage.
The domestic terrorists that Trump incited replaced an American flag near the Capitol with a Trump flag, homage to him instead of America. And those red MAGA hats, once proudly worn by some well-meaning Trump supporters, quickly became the unmistakable badge of traitors.
Conservative columnist George Will wrote, “The Trump-Hawley- Cruz insurrection against constitutional government will be an indelible stain on the nation.” According to Will, “Each will wear a scarlet “S” as a seditionist.”
Republican Sen. Mitt Romney blamed the violent assault on “a selfish man’s injured pride and the outrage of supporters who he has deliberately misinformed for the past two months and stirred to action this very morning.” He called it “an insurrection incited by the president of the United States.”
Retired Marine Corps Gen. James Mattis, Trump’s former Defense Secretary, blamed “pseudo political leaders whose names will live in infamy as profiles in cowardice” for allowing Trump to “destroy trust in our election and to poison our respect for fellow citizens.”
Mattis predicted that we will overcome “this stain,” but Trump “will deservedly be left a man without a country.”
But there are some countries that will welcome Trump, places that are run by dictators and strongmen. North Korea or the Philippines or Hungary should be glad to have him. Russia would be a natural.
If he plays it smart for a change, he will find a country without an extradition agreement with the United States. Good riddance.
