In the aftermath of the Tiger Woods auto accident, the question should not be whether he will play competitive golf again.
What the question should be is whether Woods will be able to recover from his severe leg injuries satisfactorily enough to be a mobile dad to his two children.
According to a colleague who lives 15 minutes from the crash site, the area where Woods left the road has been the scene of many crashes. Most have been due to excessive speed over the 45-mph limit. It is the third vehicular incident for Woods, dating back to 2009.
* The state of Texas was unable to keep its power grid working, such that many Texans were without power and drinkable water for days on end. Yet, the state legislature found time to approve a $34.2 million contract for its public university’s new football coach.
* Where are they now? Buffalo native Jim Burt never played for his hometown team, but he did win two Super Bowl rings. The first came in Super Bowl XXI with the New York Giants, the second with the 49ers in Super Bowl XXIV. Burt played for the Giants from 1981-88 and the Niners from 1989-91. Post-football, Burt worked in real estate, buying and selling homes and maintaining interests in a number of rental properties.
Now 61, Burt resides in Saddle River, N.J., just outside New York.
Burt was an undrafted free agent in ’81 and transitioned to nose tackle, where he played 118 career games.
So, why didn’t he try to make the Bills, his boyhood team?
“Almost every team was calling me to come for a tryout,” Burt told Vic Carucci of the Buffalo News. “Except for the Bills. They already had (all-pro) Freddie Smerlas.”
* Only one negative to the opening of baseball season … That’s the provision that puts a runner on second base if a game is tied after nine innings (or seven in the doubleheaders). With offenses what they are now, even if this year’s baseballs are slightly less juiced, this corner has a practical remedy.
Eliminate all shifts. There must be two defensive players to the left of second base and two to the right of it. No exceptions. Batted balls that are now outs due to the shifts would find their way to the outfield. Meaning more action, more runs, less chance of extra innings and it removes the fraudulent taint of two free, nonearned bases.
* Never in the history of the game has the adage “you never have enough pitching” been as true as it will be in 2021. No wonder the Giants’ Farhan Zaidi and his contemporaries are taking a look at most anyone, past or present, who has pitched at the big-league level. Even if three or four years removed.
* The best NHL player only hockey aficionados know of: Edmonton’s Leon Draisaitl.
* After Hank Aaron hit his 715th home run to top The Babe, he went on to hit 40 more homers before retiring. Barry Bonds hit just six more after his 756th topped Aaron.
* He is the only man in baseball history to collect seven hits in one game and drive in eight runs in another: Bay Area native and Giants shortstop Brandon Crawford. Crawford debuted back in 2011.
* The college football transfer portal has grown so big that Washington State now has an assistant coach whose title is “Director of Transfer Recruiting.”
* Just for the heck of it … What’s your favorite Beatles song? “Norwegian Wood” it says here.
