Check your irrigation system with these easy guides

Almost half of the highly treated drinking water provided to homes by Hillsborough County Public Utilities ends up being used for lawn and landscape irrigation. Additionally, homes with timer-controlled irrigation systems use about 50 percent more water outdoors than homes without irrigation systems, according to the EPA.

Having an inefficient or incorrectly programmed irrigation system that wastes water not only harms the environment, it also wastes money on your utility bills. Proper irrigation can also protect your landscape investment by encouraging deeper root growth and healthier, more drought tolerant landscapes.

Just like other routine home maintenance, your irrigation system should be maintained at least monthly to:

  • Set up an appropriate irrigation schedule for your specific seasonal landscape needs
  • Inspect the system while in use to check valves, sprinkler heads, and emitters for breaks, clogs, and misalignment
  • Identify areas of the yard and plants that may be receiving too much or not enough water
