Ethan Shippert would like to share an invaluable lesson: Turn off your phone before driving a vintage Formula 1 car. Or any race car, for that matter.
The owner of Shippert Racing Services came to this piece of knowledge last week at his home track of Sonoma Raceway where the business owner, mechanic, and amateur racer was asked to shake down a 1975 Shadow DN5 ahead of its next vintage event.
“When I test cars for folks, I usually keep my phone in my pocket,” Shippert wrote on Instagram. “Mainly so I can communicate with the mechanics if we have an issue that forces me to pull off. I can call them and say ‘It’s X or Y and we’ll need Z to fix it so have that ready, etc.’ This shortens down time off track as well as keeping them calm when I don’t come around in some priceless hunk of junk that is turning its first laps since the Bronze Age.
“Yesterday when I was driving the DN5 however, my phone went into emergency mode and found its way to call 911. We were doing out-and-ins and every time I’d come in, I could hear my phone ringing and feel it buzzing. I merely thought, ‘One of my clients really wants to get ahold of me.’ It was the dispatcher trying to check in with me.”
With his phone continuously butt-dialing Sonoma’s emergency hotline while lapping the wine country road course as the 500-hp Cosworth DFV V8 sang over his shoulders, Shippert climbed from the Shadow to find an incredibly kind voicemail awaiting his attention.
“So when I got out of the car, I saw the message and very sheepishly called in and asked for Jennifer,” he continued. “She was very nice and said, 'Yes, we heard the engine noise in the background, we saw your location was Sears Point, and we saw you were doing 110mph so we assumed all was well...”
