Tim Tebow is making an improbable NFL comeback with the Jacksonville Jaguars. It’s a Hail Mary bid to revitalize his football career at a new position, tight end, under the direction of his college coach, Urban Meyer, who’s beginning his first year in pro football now with the revival of Tebow-mania.
But there’s one team known for questionable moves that needs Tebow even more: the injury-ridden New York Mets.
One outfielder took a fastball to the nose. Another ran face first into the outfield wall. Three other position players are out with injuries to their finger, hand, and oblique, while two more have hamstring issues. And minor leaguers are being promoted faster than they can be fitted for jerseys. The baseball season is only six weeks old, but the New York Mets are almost out of Mets.
By Tuesday night, the first-place team in the National League East no longer had a single infielder or outfielder available to call up on its 40-man roster when it suffered yet another injury. Desperate for any help at all, they acquired a minor-leaguer from the Chicago Cubs for $1.
Instead, the former Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback is trying to make his way onto an NFL regular-season roster for the first time since 2012 when he played for New York’s other side show, the Jets.
