Napoli’s record signing Victor Osimhen has bid an emotional farewell to Gennaro Gattuso as the reported Tottenham Hotspur and Wolves target leaves the Serie A giants, writing on Instagram.
If Napoli had found a winner during Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Hellas Verona, would the 2006 World champion still be in a job?
It was their failure to qualify for the Champions League on the final day of a gruelling season that cost Gattuso his job in the end, the 43-year-old given his marching orders after an embattled Juventus sneaked into the top four at the Partenopei’s expense.
The AC Milan legend should not be out of work for long, however.
Tuttomercatoweb report that Gattuso has been lined up as a potential replacement for Nuno Espirito Santo at Wolverhampton Wanderers with Spurs also interested.
Gattuso played an important role in the deal that saw Osimhen leave Lille for Napoli in a record-breaking £63 million move last summer and the Nigeria international is certainly disappointed to see one of Europe’s most promising young coaches head for the exit.
“You have been instrumental towards my development,” wrote Osimhen, who scored 10 goals in a debut season interrupted by injuries and illness. “Not just as a player but also as a man.
“I really appreciate all you do for me on and off the pitch, I admired you as a player and to be able to work under you and call you my BOSS is something I will never forget in a rush.
“I hold you in high esteem forever. I wish you all the very best on your new adventure BOSS.”
With Bruno Lage the clear frontrunner for Wolves, according to the BBC, and with Tottenham linked to a whole host of alternative options, Gattuso does not appear to be the number one choice for either club at present.
Fiorentina and Lazio have both shown a serious interest, however, with the midfielder-turned-manager expected to stay in Serie A instead.
