Redshirt freshmen we shouldn’t forget about in 2021 - 247Sports

The 2021 season will see among the smallest redshirt freshman classes in recent memory. With the NCAA pausing everyone’s eligibility clocks during the 2020 campaign, many coaches threw the majority of their true freshmen into the fray to get them immediate experience. That’s created a scenario in 2021 where there are far fewer redshirt freshmen – we’re still running the eligibility clocks at 247Sports as players will decide if they want the extra year at the end of their careers – than normal.

This is not to say redshirt freshmen won’t make an impact. We’ve seen two redshirt freshman Heisman Trophy winners within the last decade. And while Spencer Rattler didn’t quite have that type of impact a year ago, he still emerged as one of college football’s top overall signal callers. Those like Grayson McCall (Coastal Carolina), Kyren Williams (Notre Dame), Warren McClendon (Georgia) and Brandon Joseph (Northwestern) also played a major role in the direction of the 2020 season.

Exiting spring ball, these are the redshirt freshmen nationally you should have your eye on ahead of the 2021 campaign. They’re going to make an impact.
