With the all the focus on Jamal Adams, don’t forget Quandre Diggs’ looming contract extension - Field Gulls

Heading into the offseason, the 12s knew that strong safety Jamal Adams and the Seattle Seahawks would be talking about an extension. Then we learned during the mandatory minicamp that LT Duane Brown was also seeking an extension. But let’s not forget about free safety Quandre Diggs.

There was an article by Michael-Shawn Dugar in The Athletic on Wednesday (6/23): Seahawks face expensive contract decisions with Duane Brown, Quandre Diggs, Jamal Adams.

Per Dugar:

The Seahawks’ players and coaches are on break until the start of training camp. The front office, though, still has work to do on the business side with regard to the expiring deals of three key veterans: strong safety Jamal Adams, left tackle Duane Brown and free safety Quandre Diggs.

And Dugar writes this about Diggs, specifically:

Diggs changed the complexion of Seattle’s defense when he arrived midway through the 2019 season. Then in 2020, his first full year with the Seahawks, he made his first career Pro Bowl and finished second among safeties in interceptions (5) and sixth in total passes defensed (10), according to Sportradar.

Given that I advocated for extending Diggs in one of the first articles I wrote for Field Gulls, this seems like a logical move to me.

But how do the 12s feel?

Should the Hawks be committing to Quandre Diggs for 2022 and beyond or should they be looking at other players on the roster to maybe fill his spot instead?

Dugar’s opinion is pretty clear:

Seattle at the moment doesn’t have viable replacements behind (Diggs). Third-year defenders Marquise Blair and Ugo Amadi were on the team when Seattle acquired Diggs in the first place, and neither has much experience at free safety. The Seahawks also haven’t been able to draft well at the position outside of Earl Thomas in 2010. Seattle has learned the hard way that this defense has very little chance of thriving without above-average free safety play. Diggs provides that.

Contract-wise, Diggs is currently the 19th-highest-paid safety in the league with a $5.95M base salary in 2021 and up to $200k in additional monies. None of that is guaranteed.

How much Diggs will be looking for on his next contract is currently an open question, but with the franchise tag estimated to be >$13M in 2022, it’s a safe bet that he will at least come close to doubling his income in the very near future. The only question is if he’ll be doing it in Seattle . . . or someplace else.
